Congratulation on Technology

Recently, the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government announced the "Shaanxi Provincial People's Government's Decision on 2023 Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Awards", which was nominated by Shaanxi Provincial Chemical Industry Society. Kaili Catalyst & New Materials Co., LTD., Shaanxi Jintai Chlor-alkali Chemical Co., LTD., Inner Mongolia Ordos Electric Power Metallurgy Group Co., LTD. Chlor-alkali Chemical Branch, jointly declared the "Creation and application of high-performance gold-based catalyst for acetylene synthesis of vinyl chloride" project won the first prize of 2023 Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.

       Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the second largest general-purpose synthetic resin material and plays an important role in the national economy and defense industry. Vinyl chloride is the key monomer of synthetic PVC, China's energy structure determines its production route will adopt acetylene process for a long time, but the process uses highly toxic and bioaccumulated mercury chloride as the catalyst active component, mercury catalyst production, use and recovery process there is a large amount of mercury loss, to the ecological environment and human health brought great harm. As the world's largest PVC producer and consumer, China is facing the huge pressure to comply with the Minamata Convention on Mercury, and mercury-free is the only way for the green and sustainable development of China's PVC industry.

       Aiming at the scientific problems and technical "bottlenecks" existing in the industrial application of gold-based catalyst, this project has successfully replaced mercury catalyst to catalyst acetylene hydrochlorination to synthesize vinyl chloride after more than 10 years of continuous independent innovation, and solved the problems of easy inactivation and poor stability existing in the industrial application of catalysts. The whole process technology of catalyst industrial production, regeneration and recovery has been formed. The industrial application of the project catalyst has promoted and achieved a major breakthrough in China's acetylene PVC mercury-free production technology, actively promoted the healthy development of PVC industry in the direction of green and low-carbon, and will make important contributions to China's implementation of the international mercury convention and the achievement of carbon neutrality.
